Red, Amsterdam

Sometimes you hear about a concept, and you wonder why you didn’t think of this. Same could be said about restaurant Red in Amsterdam. It’s from the owners of the van der Valk-hotelchain (maybe I shouldn’t have said this, since it doesn’t look like van der Valk at all). No, they are not serving apple sauce with a cherry. The menu is very easy but oh so good. At red they deserve 3 different dishes: Lobster, tournedos or a combination of the two, surf & turf. In my opinion there are not many restaurants were you can have good lobster, but here you do. They don’t mess with the lobster by making all difficult dishes, it is very plain with some butter or home made mayonaise. The tournedos is also magnificant. Usually I never chose beef at a restaurant, since I can perfectly make it myself at home and have the best quality of beef at my butcher. However at Red they serve delicious bearnaisse sauce with the beef, which is my favourite.

Another reason I like the restaurant is the central location on the corner of Keizersgracht and Spiegelgracht. Because of all the windows you see the streetlife of Amsterdam while you enjoy your dinner. The interieur is kind of chic, with velvet chairs and the huge enlightening picture on the ceiling.
