Old school – Amsterdam
School has never been really my favorite thing. However a new organic restaurant in the city does bring me back to school. Old School is a restaurant located in a former school building, in the Southern area of Amsterdam. Very close to RAI station. The area where the new restaurant is located is not an area where you see many other bars, restaurants or shops. Let’s say an unexpected place and you need to use googlemaps to find it. Personally I always like these mysterious spots which are a little hidden. It gives a special vibe to a restaurant or bar.
And special this place is. Nothing is changed from the outside of the building. And even the doors and hallway are the same as before when it was a school. On thing that has changed is that they put a big bamboo-bar in the middle of the classroom, and tables now the wooden tables are covered in white tablecloth. Instead of the fluorescent lightning there is candle light, and the kitchen is now in the hands of a chef instead of a teacher. At Old School they serve biological and local food. Which means the menu is changing during the seasons. On the terrace you have a choice of a fish, meat or vegetarian starter or main course. In the restaurant itself there are more options on the menu. The chef uses local and organic products, nevertheless the kitchen is a mix between French and Italian. The dishes not only tasted delicious, but also looked beautiful, with a special attention for a variety of colored vegetables on the plate. No heavy carb meals at Old School, but healthy and tasty dishes. A starter is approximately 9 euro, and a main course 19. Old School is definitely worth a visit, and during dinner you could meanwhile enjoy the skyline of the ‘ Rivierenbuurt’ .
As a starter I choose the vegetarian option, artichoke with a parmesan foam. As a main course I chose fish, sea bass with a multi colored beetroot salad. For desert I went for cheese, I can never have enough cheese in a day.
