No fixed address, a fixed three-course menu for 25 euros, a casual atmosphere and delicious cocktails. I’m talking about restaurant BAK. A new initiative of three friends who all shared the feeling that catering could be better, easier and cheaper. We all share this feeling right?! I was very curious about this new, great concept. Last week I experienced the traveling kitchen at the Amsterdamse Kuntskapel. My friends and I were really excited about the concept, location and the menu. When we entered the area, we were impressed. Set in a large round space, the kitchen was situated in the middle of the room, surrounded by tables. The light was attenuated, creating a cozy atmosphere and they played good music. The walls were decorated with projected images of birds.The ambiance was already perfect. You might be curious about the menu and the food now, right?! We suspected the menu might have something to do with poultry, because of the bird images. Ok, before I go crazy about the food I need to tell you about the drinks.
We started with a delicious cocktail, called Lemon drop; orange infused vodka, lemon & simple syrup. Super nice and only 5 euros!
Before the starter we got an amuse: Gazpacho of strawberry, carrot, tomato & basil.
The starter, poached eggs with raw asparagus and peas puree, was almost too pretty to eat.
For the main course we could choose between meat and a vegetarian dish. We choose calf neck with paprika, and squid, topped with sauce of the squid. I have to admit, I actually don’t like tropical seafood. I don’t like the texture and it looks a bit scary, but sometimes you need to try new things. It actually tasted really good. After the first 2 dishes I was looking forward to the dessert. Always my favorite course of the menu. It couldn’t have dissapointed and it didn’t.
We had a ganache of white chocolate & beetroot with goat cheese and yogurt sorbet. After the majority of people finished dinner, the music turned up. We had a blast. For those who love good food and want to try something new, reserve a table for next week.
