Can Joan de S´Aigo, Mallorca
Did you knew that they had ice in the year 1700? Well they did. Not that I often think about this phenomenon. However during my visit to Mallorca I visited this cafetaria and ice-cream shop in the old city centre of Palma de Mallorca. Its origins dates back to the 18th century and its founder was Joan de s’Aigo (which explains the name). Joan de s´Aigo´s work originally consisted in collecting the snow that was in The Mountain Rage of Tramontana to sell it in order to produce ice creams and other products with the arrival of spring. In his first business, he began selling and developing water flavored with various fruits and homemade ice-creams, expanding the business with the sale of typical sweets of Mallorca. 324 years later it´s still one of the favourite places for the Mallorcan locals to have their afternoon refreshment or sweets. Don´t expact a glamorous decoration or a luxurious plate with ice. You get your icecream in a glass on a plate. However when having the ice-cream it feels like you are back in 1700. The cafetaria is still in the original state. The tableware, the decoration, everyting feels ´mediterrenean vintage´. I was surprised that I didn´t saw any tourist here. Probably because it´s not on a busy shopping street, and a little difficult to find. The cafetaria is very close to Plaza Mayor on a small alley called Sans. However please google the location before you go there, otherwise you get lost.
